SUMMARY:Brewing Change in Buffalo
DESCRIPTION:SBR has partnered with the CoRE Initiative and the Environmental Alliance to host this early fall networking event.  Throughout the year we want to give you the opportunity to visit places and meet people who are helping inspire and shape the region today and in the future. (That includes you!)  We are starting this journey in the Old First Ward where Buffalo first moved goods and made products along the River. \n The CoRE Initiative is a Buffalo born and led research and education partnership co-led by the UB Materials Design & Innovation Department\, Niagara Share and Clean Production Action with non-governmental\, community outreach organizations and business organizations (including SBR) that bring together complementary expertise – in research\, market analysis\, policy formulation\, and social innovation — to support the transition towards a safer materials economy and building blocks for the factory of the future. \n So let’s hang out in the beer garden\, enjoy the day\, and start talking.

SUMMARY:The New Normal - Preparing for climate change impacts on supply chain management
DESCRIPTION:Business supply chains involve a web of third parties\, including product distributors\, service providers\, manufacturers\, contractors\, and logistics firms that store and move materials.  All of them are dependent on their own infrastructure\, transportation and supply networks.  When climate change or extreme weather impacts a part of your supply chain\, the domino effect can ultimately impact your ability to provide products and services to your customers. \nSo what are the risks today and in the future? How can your business prepare for sudden environmental shocks and slow on-set disasters? How do you know if your suppliers are prepared? How can you detect supplier issues? \nThe panel of experts will include both researchers and local businesses working to understand the risks and adapt to the new normal of supply chain management. \n

SUMMARY:Scholars@Hallwalls: Adam Rome\, “Partly Green: The Past and Future of Sustainable Business”
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center for our eighth year of Faculty Fellows talks! This lecture series brings current UB humanities research out into the community – with complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres. Free and open to the public\, in partnership with WNY Sustainable Business Roundtable.\nPlease register by sending an email to: asa@wnysustainablebusiness.org.\nIn case of bad weather\, please check your email for notifications about event cancellations.\nCan capitalism become green without fundamental changes in the rules of the marketplace? The last 30 years has been a revealing test of the limits of corporate sustainability initiatives. In the United States\, no major environmental legislation has passed since 1990\, yet many businesses have worked hard to become greener. How successful have their efforts been? What has driven change\, and what has stood in the way? The answers to those questions offer important insight into what we still need to do to build a sustainable economy.\nAdam is an environmental historian and author of The Bulldozer in the Countryside: Suburban Sprawl and the Rise of American Environmentalism (2001) and The Genius of Earth Day: How a 1970 Teach-In Unexpectedly Made the First Green Generation (2013). He also is co-editor of Green Capitalism? Business and the Environment in the Twentieth Century (2017). In addition to a book about recent efforts by American businesses to become more sustainable\, he is working on the environmental-history volume for Oxford’s Very Short Introduction series. From 2002 to 2005\, he edited the journal Environmental History.

SUMMARY:The Food Energy Water Nexus
DESCRIPTION:The Food Energy Water (FEW) Nexus: A Systems Approach for Improving Energy Conservation\nThe purpose of this event is to trigger a dialogue on the FEW nexus and how businesses can approach reducing their energy footprint through conservation efforts in water and food systems.\nOvercoming today’s barriers will require new ideas\, approaches\, and collaboration. We will feature three speakers representing academia and industry perspectives on the topic. Let us get together and discuss what the risk and rewards are in Western New York. Light refreshments will be served.\nRegister today! Please use the Eventbrite link below.\nOur Speakers\nBrian M Sibiga\, Senior Associate Principal at Wendel Companies\, “How Energy and Water Conservation Can Be Integrated to Help Your Business”\nDr. Emmanuel Frimpong Boamah\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Urban and Regional Planning\, University at Buffalo\, “Food-Energy-Water Nexus: Designing Flexible & Adaptive Interdependent Systems”\nAva Labuzetta\, Environmental Engineer at New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I)\, “Reducing energy consumption by understanding the food-water-energy nexus” \nThis event is co-organized by the Sustainable Urban Environments Initiative in the College of Arts and Sciences at University at Buffalo.\nFree parking at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve\, 93 Honorine Dr.\, Depew. Follow the brick path to the Environmental Education Center.\nQuestions? Please contact Susan Clark\, email: sclark1@buffalo.edu or Asa Guilamo\, email: asa@wnysustainablebusiness.org. In case of bad weather\, please check your email for notifications about event cancellations.\nThe FEW Nexus approach:\nFood\, Energy\, and Water systems are interdependent. For example\, producing food requires water for growing crops and cleaning products. Transporting and refrigerating food requires energy. Delivering water requires energy for pumps and conveyance. And producing energy requires water for cooling. Innovation at the FEW nexus involves thinking differently about how industries meet their customers’ food\, energy and water needs and the built-in interdependencies.

SUMMARY:Navigating the changing markets for recycling: Coffee\, Discussion & Tour at Modern’s Single Stream Recycling Facility
DESCRIPTION:WNY and the world has a waste challenge. We want to talk about it!\nIf you’ve ever considered rethinking the way your company manages waste\, you don’t want to miss this discussion. Meet us on September 24th to:\nGet an introduction to the current recycling markets\nVentilate about your company’s recycling related pains & headaches\nShare ideas with fellow WNYSBR members and others on how to best navigate your company’s recycling and waste collection needs after the China Ban\nJoin a tour of Modern’s Single Stream Recycling Facility\, led by Operations Manager Fenna Mandalong & Production Manager Marcus Gibson\nMany responsible companies (and individuals!) are aiming at utilizing their waste as a resource. The China Ban has presented U.S. manufacturers and service providers with a new set of challenges and opportunities. Different actors are pushing for elevating quality above quantity\, adjusting to the new reality of recycling as a cost instead of paying for itself as a commodity. What are the necessary infrastructure investments? How can we all recycle better and smarter? What adjustments are needed from you and your colleagues’ part? How can your company’s needs be met? \nCome and share your concerns and company needs! WNYSBR will follow up this event with a Dumpster Dive and further discussions in October.\nProgram \n4:00 – 4:15         Welcome and introduction \n4:15 – 4:30         Coffee and discussion \n4:30 – 5:30         Distribution of hard hats\, safety vests and safety glasses & Tour \n5:30 –                  Continued networking at Black Thorn\, a neighborhood restaurant & bar \n  \nOpen to both WNYSBR Members and Non-members. SUMMARY:Dumpster Dive – A Solid Waste Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Check out the video recap HERE! Thank you Katie Soscia for putting this video together\, and to all the UB students who helped out sorting & weighing recyclables!\n\nAs the saying goes\, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. A dumpster dive gives a company a better idea of the contamination rate in their waste\, and the information can be used to further educate employees and executives to implement necessary changes to their recycling programs.\nJoin us as a brave team of UB students from the Sustainable Urban Environments Initiative will dive into Tri-Main Center’s dumpster in search for treasured information to improve their waste streams and processes! The students will be tasked with figuring out how much and what type of waste has been generated\, and to separate all items into recyclable and non-recyclable sections.\nThe goal is:\nTo get a better overall understanding of a company’s behavior when it comes to waste.\nTo identify what can be made to improve the operational flow of items at a facility with 3R (reduce\, reuse\, recycle) in the center of our minds.\nWe will start the morning with a presentation\, addressing companies recycling related pains and head aches and the issue of wishful recycling. Tri-Main Center will share some of the hurdles they have encountered along their own journey\, such as mixed-value waste\, local infrastructure constraints\, storage restrictions\, transportation concerns and internal culture issues. Andrew Goldstein from Erie County will also offer some practical advice on what can be learned and the next steps.\nProgram\n8.45 – 9.00 am: Doors open\, coffee is served (Bring your own cup!)\n9.00 – 9.15 am: Welcome\, introduction to WNYSBR & Tri-Main Center (& intro to the students who will gear up and head to the dumpster)\n9.15 – 10.00 am: Presentations on the how\, why and next steps\n10.00 – 10.30 am: The whole group goes out to the dumpster watches and/or facilitates the students in categorizing & measuring the content\n10.30 am: Wrap-up incl. video recording of the group\, the students work & Tri-Main’s final comments\nRegister here!\nParking and directions\nThe main entrance to Tri-Main Center is on Halbert Street. There is limited parking available in the Access Lot “A”. When full\, please park in the Jewett or Brewster Parking Lots. A security guard will be there to let people in.The program begins at Mid-City Office Furniture in Suite 240.\nWe encourage everyone to car pool if possible!
